Highlights for hydroxychloroquine. Hydroxychloroquine oral tablet is available as a brand-name drug and a generic drug. Brand name Plaquenil. Hydroxychloroquine comes only as a tablet you take by mouth. Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat malaria, lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. I had to stop Plaquenil after a few days. I couldn't walk, was dizzy, my speech was slurred, blurry vision, etc. but, I'm the one who usually gets side effects. I know people who Plaquenil has worked wonders. The side effects cleared up within a week. I also have Sjorgens, and my eyes were dryer on Plaquenil, but the blurry vision was the worst.

There is no taper needed or withdrawal, but if it has been helping you, you may have increased symptoms by the time you go for your next appointment. If so, you would likely be able to get a prescription from that doctor for one month's supply to tide you over. I have only taken it once, so I am not sure what the results will be. I stopped mine and went into a life threatening flare - I would call your PCP to get a refill You may be fine or not- depends on if your illness has been lurking in the background waiting for an opportunity to launch an attack Louters, I went to see a new rheum and he took me off the Plaquenil to see what symptoms would show. I agree with poobie and would call your pcp to get a refill if possible.

  5. Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up.

Plaquenil Withdrawal Saturday was a week since I stopped taking Plaquenil, aka Hydroxychloroquine, per my doctor’s instructions, and I think I am going through some form of withdrawal. I took the drug as a treatment for sarcoidosis and one of the side effects is a reduction in white blood cells, which is what has happened to me. Hydroxychloroquine brand namePlaquenil is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD approved for adults with RA. It is often given in combination with methotrexate and sulfasalazine a treatment known as triple therapy, to help slow RA disease progression for patients who do not get relief from methotrexate therapy alone. 1,2 You can also put off joint damage, and in some cases, you can do more than just slow it down. Being able to stop joint damage can lessen pain and mean a better quality of life. Hydroxychloroquine is one of the medications that can be a valuable part of your treatment plan.
