How does plaquenil help fight lupus

The Rheumatologists I saw were of the opinion that since I was already on steroids I just needed monitoring not any other meds. I was recently referred to a Rheumatologist by the Dr. She now wants me to start on Plaquenil, I am quite concerned because my eyes seemed to be the only system that still work fairly well.

What Is Plaquenil? Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Plaquenil is available in generic form. What Are Side Effects of Plaquenil? Plaquenil is effective for Lupus patients, as well as people with UCTD described to me by a rheumatologist as "Lupus-like" or "Lupus-lite" or "mild Lupus". So it's very possible to be on Plaquenil without having a formal Lupus diagnosis. To get a Lupus diganosis you need to have 4 or more of 11 Lupus criteria, within a 5 year period. Plaquenil is a DMARD which has been prescribed for years to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases. When the first biologic DMARD received FDA-approval in 1998, and as other biologics followed in subsequent years, it appeared as though Plaquenil would become less prescribed.

I used Darvocet for years with no side effects and was able to get out & live a semi-normal life. I asked her if the Plaquenil would help with the pain but she indicated it probably wouldn't.

Plaquenil does help with some of the symptoms of Lupus, but it does take a few weeks to start helping. It's most important role is to inhibit progression of the disease -- I'm really surprised you haven't been on it ever since the Lupus was diagnosed. With extremly high probability Plaquenil has nothing NEGATIVE to do with your lower back pain and with protein in urine. On the contrary. I t is one of the most frequently used medications for lupus because studies show that it may prevent lupus flares and kidney damage. 2. Plaquenil changes the way your immune system works. In some kinds of lupus, your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. Plaquenil tries to quiet or slow down the immune system. It does help me I see someone Spanky in a comment said they have Behcet’s. I have that also and never knew anyone else that had it.

Hydroxychloroquine and angioedema AAAAI The package insert lists angioedema a potential risk but does not give any indication if it can be delayed weeks after start of drug.
