    Rash from taking plaquenil

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

I just started taking Plaquenil a few weeks ago. I stared with 100mgs every second day for a week then 100mgs daily for a week. Now I am taking 100mgs and 200mgs on alternate days. My aim is to take 200mgs daily. I noticed this morning that I had a rash red spots across my chest. It didn't bother me until I raised the dose above 200mg a day then it went wild. Besides the red rash I had all over I also had itchy bumps on the palms of my hands that seemed to be deep under the skin. My doctor had me to stop all medicines I was taking until it went away then start the plaquenil again. The rash started again within a day. So after three weeks of taking Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine I developed a rash and had to stop. Now I'm really worried since Plaquenil is supposed to be the 'life insurance' drug of lupus, people have less flares on it, live longer, etc.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.
