Hydroxychloroquine is widely used in the treatment of post-Lyme arthritis. It may have both an anti- spirochaete activity and an anti-inflammatory activity, similar to the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Anti-dsDNA specifically targets the genetic material found in the nucleus of a cell, hence the name "anti-dsDNA." The anti-dsDNA test identifies the presence of these autoantibodies in the blood. While anti-dsDNA may be present at a low level with a number of disorders, it is primarily associated with lupus. Anti-malarial drugs, such as Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine, is often used to manage lupus and can also be effective in scleroderma. Plaquenil is thought to interfere with communication between immune cells, which can suppress the damaging effect of an overly active immune response without raising a patient’s risk of susceptibility to infections.

For prolonged treatment of lupus or arthritis, adverse effects include the acute symptoms, plus altered eye pigmentation, acne, anaemia, bleaching of hair, blisters in mouth and eyes, blood disorders, convulsions, vision difficulties, diminished reflexes, emotional changes, excessive coloring of the skin, hearing loss, hives, itching, liver problems or liver failure, loss of hair, muscle paralysis, weakness or atrophy, nightmares, psoriasis, reading difficulties, tinnitus, skin inflammation and scaling, skin rash, vertigo, weight loss, and occasionally urinary incontinence. The most common adverse effects are a mild nausea and occasional stomach cramps with mild diarrhea. For short-term treatment of acute malaria, adverse effects can include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, heart problems, reduced appetite, headache, nausea and vomiting.

The role of hydroxychloroquine HCQ for achieving this control is now recognized. SLEDAI scores; and C3, C4, and dsDNA levels. High disease activity for patients with SLE was defined as a PGA 1.0. In the non-SLE patients, disease activity was measured by PGA on a visual analog scale ranging from 0 mm no disease activity to 100 mm. Hydroxychloroquine HCQ is widely used in SLE to control disease activity, but its use is also associated with an improvement in long-term prognosis. Beyond the beneficial effect in well-established disease, our hypothesis is that treatment with HCQ might have a beneficial impact on ED prevention in SLE. Feb 03, 2015 Anti-dsDNA high specificity but sensitivity is only 70%. The level reflects disease activity. The value often varies with disease activity and sometimes guides changes in therapy. A rise in antibody titre may indicate that immunosuppression needs to be increased. Anti-Sm is the most specific antibody but sensitivity is only 30-40%.
